World Rowing favorevolmente impressionata dai risultati dell’Italia a Plovdiv

L’organo ufficiale della Federazione Internazionale, World Rowing, nel suo comunicato al termine della prima giornata di finali titola cosi: “Italy impress in first Finals of the 2023 World Rowing Under 23 Championships” che equivale a “Buona impressione dell’Italia nelle prime Finali dei Campionati Mondiali Under 23 2023”. All’interno del pezzo, riportato in calce, l’estensore parte dallo scorso anno quando a Varese l’Italia, nelle acque casalinghe, vinse il medagliere e questa volta si presenta a Plovdiv con le carte in regola per tentare di bissare il risultato 2022 o per lo meno di rimanere nei piani alti della classifica. Oggi intanto il team azzurro si è portato a casa sei medaglie: 4 d’oro (quattro con maschile, due senza pesi leggeri femminile, quattro di coppia pesi leggeri maschile e femminile) e 2 d’argento (due senza under 23 maschile, due senza pesi leggeri maschile). Un bottino che tanto basta per stare, almeno fino a domani, in cima alla classifica.

Domani sarà un altro giorno, l’ultimo delle finali, e vedremo quello che accadrà anche se qualche probabile medaglia ci è sfuggita di mano come quella che era nelle corde del singolista gialloverde Leonardo Tedoldi che, dopo aver battagliato in semifinale per tre quarti di percorso, negli ultimi venti metri, praticamente già qualificato per la finale, ha avuto un crollo netto, probabilmente un black out dovuto alla fatica e al caldo, e non è riuscito a fare le ultime palate chiudendo quarto con il rischio anche di cadere (per la cronaca dopo essere stato soccorso dai medici ora sta bene). Un forte abbraccio per la forza e il coraggio dimostrato nonostante l’epilogo finale. Buona lettura e appuntamento a domani, per ora la classifica provvisoria è questa:

ITALY IMPRESS IN FIRST FINALS OF THE 2023 WORLD ROWING UNDER 23 CHAMPIONSHIPS

They topped the medal table on home waters in Varese last year, and Italy are once again looking impressive after the first day of Finals at the 2023 World Rowing Under 23 Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.

Following a week impacted by schedule changes to avoid the worst of the heat, the first medal races of this year’s Under 23 Championships got underway this morning for nine of the 22 boat classes.

The Australian anthem was first to be heard as their women’s coxed four defended their title as World Rowing U23 Champions. Although the Australian men attempted to follow-suit in the next race in the men’s coxed four, it was Italy who eventually prevented Great Britain from defending their title in this boat class.

The men’s coxed four victory ceremony was the first of four times we would hear the Italian National Anthem as they subsequently picked up gold medals in the lightweight women’s pair and both the lightweight women’s and men’s quadruple sculls. The lightweight men’s pair was won by the USA, turning around the result of the preliminary race earlier in the week when Italy beat them.

Lithuania became World Rowing U23 champions in the women’s pair when Martyna Kazlausakite and Kamile Kralikaite led their race from the start. In the men’s pair, it was a third consecutive World U23 gold for Great Britain’s Miles Beeson, having won in the four last year, and the eight in 2021. This year’s title came with Harry Geffen, who was in the gold medal winning British eight last year.

The last of today’s gold medals was claimed by Romania, in the women’s quadruple sculls. This crew clearly had a point to prove as the line-up was completely unchanged from last year when they missed out on gold by 0.5 seconds.
